MAN OVERBOARD

March 28th 2012 an anonymous Estonian immigrant was on his way home, from Helsinki to Tallinn. 10 minutes after the departure of the ferry he jumped overboard into freezing sea. The rescue boats and helicopters couldn't find him. He was thought to be dead. Three weeks later he appeared to be alive and returned back home. What happened to him during those three weeks? This is a mystery that needs to be solved, in order to re-articulate the borders between the East and the West and re-think the capitalist vocabulary imposing the meaning of human life. Keywords: an empty island, an empty summer house, potato chips, a miracle.

NO BORDERS - NO DIFFERENCE?

The exhibition departs from neoliberal borderless condition, where Eastern-Europe doesn`t formally differ from the West anymore. Because of the all-embracing depolitization, the difference has become a myth. East-Europe is like a forgotten fairy tale. Philosopher Ovidiu Tichindeleanu has written that East-Europe, in principle, is nothing – if it exists at all, then it is rather hope than a presence and rather past than future. Such a viewpoint demands a new East-European discourse, as the current one, which has dissolved into the paradoxes of "the former East and the former West“, is based on hopelessness and Western thinking. If East-Europe is nothing, then its content is not based on anyting visible or positively existing, but rather on an absence and exclusion. Therefore the new East-European discourse doesn´t need to ground on a certain territory or restore the old borders or stay strictly inside of them, but rather depart from the current „borderless“ condition and develop a cross-border decolonial position.
All works in the exhibition are based on real or symbolic border areas, they criticize the „borderless“ condition, ask questions and make statements that might contribute to a new East-European discourse.
Thexhibition is open from 12.04. to 05.05.2013 in Tartu Artist House Monumental Gallery (Vanemuise 26, Tartu). Opening: 6 PM, 12.04.
